Sadfishing is the new buzzword.
Urban dictionary defines ‘Sadfishing’ as
“The practice of writing about one’s unhappiness or emotional problems on social media, especially in a vague way, in order to attract attention and sympathetic response.”
This term became more popular after celebrities like Justin Bieber and Kendal Jenner used social media to express the amount of pressure they undergo, being under constant spotlight.
Opening up oneself to the internet can have either positive or negative impact, mostly negative.
- People may want to have a sympathetic ear and build a supportive network online so that they can feel better.
- Sensitive people can get bullied and can go into further depression.
- Some indulge in these tricks for comments and likes and young minds can not differentiate between genuine feelings or sadfishing.
- In some situations people may even ask for donations etc.
I feel sadfishing is just another attention seeking format.
Researchers have warned that sadfishing is threatening teenagers’ mental health, since many of them due to fear of parents, seeking solace online. And parents must not ignore child’s emotional outbursts.
Online expression of emotions is a bad idea, since either one may get bullied or given wrong advice.Finding genuine advice is rare.
