In the recent discussion in blog articles about ‘Truth’ and meaning of ‘Absolute truth’ and ‘Relative truth, I realized that we forgot to discuss the role of ‘Maya’ ( illusion). Recently I came across an article in op ed of Deccan Chronicle, and thought it’s apt to understand the meaning of Maya (illusion),in our day to day life’ by sharing the same .
Before we proceed further, you should know that Sudama, is a childhood friend of Hindu Deity Lord Krishna.
One day Sudama wished to have a glimpse of God’s Maya (illusion). He had heard a lot about Maya but never understood what it was as he was always surrendered to God.
One day, he finally asked Lord Krishna, “What is Maya? What is the form of Maya? How does Maya untangle a man?” He directly sought answers of these questions from Lord Krishna and kept requesting him to show a glimpse of Maya.
Lord Krishna replied that when time comes he shall give him the answers and also show him Maya.
Then he said, “Let us go to Yamuna to take bath.” Both of them came to the banks of Yamuna to take bath. After taking bath, Lord Krishna started dressing in Yellow and in the meantime Sudama went to take a dip in water.
At the time of taking dip, Sudama felt that the river was flooded and he was being washed away in it. With great difficulty, by taking the help of a small Rock he came out of the river.
Perplexed and hungry, Sudama was roaming about and finally reached a village. There, an elephant garlanded him. People informed him that their King had died and it is their country’s rule that after the death of their king, whosoever is garlanded by the elephant would be the next king.
The coronation ceremony of Sudama was done.
After sometime, he got married and had two sons during the twelve years of his married life.
Thereafter, one day his wife passed away. Sudama started weeping in sorrow. People tried to console him.
They informed him that it was Mayapuri’s rule that he too would be sent wherever his wife went. He too would have to enter his wife’s funeral pyre.
Sudama was shell shocked to hear this. Now, he forgot mourning the demise of his wife and started weeping for himself. He said that since he was a foreigner, this rule should not be applicable to him.
When people did not listen to him and were making him sit in the pyre, he requested for permission to worship the river once last time. People allowed him to do that and sent four people to keep an eye on him.
Sudama could see death approaching him and in this fear, chanting Lord Krishna’s name, he took a dip in the river and came out crying. Just then, he saw Lord Krishna Standing and getting dressed in yellow. Lord Krishna asked Sudama as to why was he weeping.
Sudama was already stunned and when he saw Lord Krishna he was astonished too. He asked Krishna “Where did all that vanish? What all is happening? I am not able to understand anything.”
Lord Krishna said, “This is my Maya.” Maya means “forgetfulness”. Illusion, unreal, myth, ignorance, etc. are Maya. One who forgets me, the God, and thinks that the world is the only truth and is always engrossed in it, he is entrapped in Maya. Deeming the unrealistic world as real and considering Paramatma and self as to dual entities is Maya.
Despite living in the materialistic world, Maya could not touch Sudama till he was devoted or surrendered towards God but as soon as he forgot the God, he was trapped in Maya . In the same manner, worldly man forgetting God, gets entangled in Maya and spends the whole life experiencing joys and sorrows.
Despite living in the materialistic world, if we think of God at every moment (which is possible) then along with enjoying the bliss of God, we can live our worldly life too to the fullest.

“In the world of relative truths and opinions, many opinions, viewpoints, possibilities and probabilities can coexist, and each can stand on its own merits in particular contexts and conditions. This is the truth of Truth. Every truth or principle is a possibility in some context, condition or situation. Sometimes you may find it worth fighting for and sometime not. Truth is an undulating wave on the surface of impermanence. You may call it by any name, but we consider it to be Maya, the deluding power of existence which hides in the play of light and shadow to create the illusion of something or the other. You will find it only in the unstable currents of life just as the sun light that reflects upon the waters of an ocean, but you cannot truly grasp its brilliance or immensity until you cross those waters and stand on the shore. ” Jayaram V.

Ego, n. “A person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance”
Everyone of us have some amount of ego,it’s a fact.
Let us accept it.
And if somebody claims that he or she is does not have ego,it’s certain that this person is lying.
Anyone who’s successful, whatever way it has been achieved has a certain amount of ego and it is the truth.
Ego is the illusion created by our thoughts and none of us are immune from it.
Even persons with humility,on occassion succumbs to Ego.
“True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”
– C.S. Lewis
Dear friends what is your take on EGO ?
Talent is God-given, be humble. Fame is man-given, be thankful. Conceit is self-given, be careful.
Divorce happening at the drop of a hat.Causes extending from silly reasons to financial problems to infidelity to substances of abuse…….you name it..it’s there and can lead to divorce.
Less said better, since these things are happening in so called developed world, developing world and underdeveloped world.
No two persons are the same.even if you think that they are same in their interests and personalities ,still their individual reactions to the demanding situations vastly vary.
“I have never yet met with anything that was dearer to any one than his own self” — -Buddha
No body can help if one is not able to avoid Egoistic attitude
Many of us believe in Hollywood or Bollywood version of romance, passion, sex, hero kissing the heroine, lots of colourful fireworks in the background, decorated Horse cart, waiting for the couple, forever romance and happy endings. There is enormous difference between living ‘Happily ever after ‘ and ‘Happily ever before ‘
“So they were married ,to be the more together and found that they were never again so much together Divided by the morning tea, By the evening paper,By children and tradesmen’s bills”. English poet Louis MacNiece
One has to face the reality . Things are different-,like arrival of children, loans, dealing with in laws, unnecessary fighting’,controlling anger etc.etc.
Call it middle age crisis or fun and after a few years of married life ,people get bored, loose passion for love and start searching for new ways to get boost to their sexual need. These are occasions when one needs self control.
Ultimately Who are we to question the Wisdom of the God ?
My feeling is to let wife & husband recognise all their strengths and Weaknesses and be helpful to each other and their family at the same time knowing and even realising the Greatness of what is known as Institution of Marriage.
Glad,You reached this point .Kindly share your views and ideas on ‘Institution of Marriage’
