World Mental Health Day Oct 10,2020

“Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry – all forms of fear – are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Eckhart Tolle

The present economic impact due to COVID has become an added stress on the people.

Silent psychological suffering has become acute and mandatory quarantine making people go crazy as they are left alone.

Domestic violence is said to reach its peak.

Many are experiencing anxiety, depression, and  some becoming insomniacs.

People from all walks of life are suffering at present.

People need psychosocial support for Mental well-being.

This Year Theme is “Mental Health for All. Greater Investment-Greater Access”

” You don’t have to struggle in silence. You can be un-silent. You can live well with a mental health condition, as long as you open up to somebody about it”  Demi Lovato

Always we have to open up.One must freely discuss the problems with the psychologists, mental health experts and professionals and not to feel shy or cocoon oneself.

Wishing my WP readers a strong ‘mental health’ to cope with all sorts of stress.

Thank you.

National Stress Awareness Day April 16 th

National stress awareness day

In these days of pandemic, one urgently needs some kind of self enhancing humor.

Social media is flooded with memes, jokes and GIFs to lower the level of anxiety.

“Love knows no borders, neither do people with coronavirus,”

Some say this is not the time for laughter.

By watching these Gifs, jokes or memes etc, don’t get angry and add more stress !!

Using art and humor is one of the ways to calm the tense mind.

National stress awareness day is celebrated across USA ( 16 th April ) and it’s so apt in the present day situation.

April month is also said to be National Stress Awareness Month.May be… the day and month can differ in each country, I am not sure.

What is stress ?

In a medical or biological context stress is a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension. Stresses can be external (from the environment, psychological, or social situations) or internal (illness, or from a medical procedure). Stress can initiate the “fight or flight” response, a complex reaction of neurologic and endocrinologic systems. Source Medicinenet.com

And during these Corona Days ?

Of course plenty of material available on the web,how not to get stressed in times of pandemic.

Simple methods include

  • Daily exercises,healthy diet
  • Enjoying the unique opportunity given to us in the form of having ‘break’,which otherwise you can never dream of
  • Having good sleep, avoiding alcohol & other addictions
  • Being in constant touch with our near & dear
  • Realize that you are not alone to undergo anxiety these days
  • Accepting that ‘Life’ is full of uncertainties
  • Be kind to yourself
  • Learn to ‘Take it easy’ attitude
  • Realize that you can’t control everything

Hey..Covid-19..Are you going to catch me?

corona virus

“Most people talk about fear of the unknown, but if there is anything to fear, it is the known.” Deepak Chopra

Don’t let Corona infect your mind !

My friend,Let your faith be bigger than your fear.

“Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the worst are our own fears”       Rudyard Kipling

Are you anxious about the pandemic my friend?

On a lighter note…

Me: what could possibly go wrong ?

Anxiety: I’m glad you asked

Yes.I can understand you.You all are worried and anxious.Sure it’s a frightening time. By now you realized that this is not like other worries and it’s a rare situation.

I know you decided to brace up but confused a lot.I also know that you are becoming sick of TV channels and getting bored staying home..and just dying to go out and you are aware of the  ‘corona party’ that is happening in the vicinity.

What is ”Corona party” ?

Young people around the world are defying official advice & bans to carry on socializing. It’s said youngsters are busy with ‘end of the world’ drinking sessions, in groups.

There is a dangerous trend among youngsters that corona kills only old & feeble.Beach parties are still continuing.

Young adults hold “corona parties” and cough toward older people.

Virus Rebels

Millennial have become  Virus Rebels   and attending beach functions just to come out of the fear/boredom thus ignoring authorities warnings, regarding social distancing.

Millennials aren’t taking corona virus seriously

‘A ticking time bomb’ type of statements from the scientists community adding up to your tensions.

Looks like corona virus is taking toll on your mental and physical health. You are scared of scarcity of food & other essential items.

Some of the common descriptions of late,we are hearing….

  • Self isolation
  • Boredom
  • Lock downs
  • Empty shelves
  • Social distancing
  • Financial havoc
  • Bereavement
  • Emotional wreck
  • feeling sad,stressed
  • confused
  • Loss of jobs
  • uncertain future
  • not sure how long to stay indoor

Now you are dread & panicky. Don’t hit the panic button straightaway.

For Heaven’s sake don’t be anxious & uncertain. Stop worrying about the disease itself.

How to stop worrying and avoid anxiety situations ?

My friend here are 12 simple steps to be followed and I am sure you all can do it.

  1. Total ban on Dr.Google ( don’t ever check for symptoms of corona, sure psychologically you feel you are having the same symptoms )
  2. First realize that nothing under your control and let things take its own time.
  3. Stop talking or discussing about corona throughout the day & night.
  4. Remember….me time & family time. It’s a God given opportunity to bring back those lost moments, bond with family members with a fresh outlook.
  5. Stick to your usual daily routine
  6. Stay informed but avoid being obsessive with TV news
  7. Forget about your social media notifications or feeds…it’s counterproductive. Most important don’t share fake news.
  8. For reliable information,Depend on CDC or WHO bulletins or your local public health authorities bulletins issued on a daily basis.
  9. Just because you are anxious don’t indulge in alcohol, tobacco or drugs of dependence.
  10. Remember the basic things…..frequent hand washing, not touching face, mouth, nose or eyes and social distancing. and wearing mask in infection prone areas.
  11. Remember to thank the healthcare workers & other related professionals who are risking their lives in order to save you all.
  12. Be helpful to the society.

Take home points

  • Your anxious state is not going to be permanent.
  • Be kind to yourself.
  • Realize that God has some good plans ahead.

Do you worry about how to stop worrying ?

Do you worrry as to how to stop worries ?

98% of the things you worry about, don’t even happen !!

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
Matthew 6:25-34

I am not here not to give the million reasons why we worry, I am here to stress the point that we worry forever.

Worry is the main cause of worry.

We worry because we think a lot.

We think a lot because we imagine a lot.

We imagine a lot because we think a lot.

So the vicious cycle formed. And there in no stop to it.

Is it because we lack faith in ourselves ? I don’t know.

Cambridge Dictionary defines worry as

“To think about problems or unpleasant things that might happen in a way that makes you feel unhappy and frightened”.

I can tell the  three broad reasons why we worry.

1.We worry because we foresee our unknown future with millions of possibilities, majority with negative thoughts.

2. We worry because of our assumptions.

3. We worry about the past that happened,we worry about the present in real-time happenings and we worry about future because of uncertainty.

My point here is it is impossible to stop worrying……… however much saints bombard you with saintly advice regarding dos and don’ts.

Again I reiterate ” Life without worry is not possible” Remember you worry till the end of your life.I am brutally frank .In other words……

If you worry ….you are breathing.

If you are not worrying …you are dead.

So don’t make any attempts to stop worrying otherwise  you are the loser at every attempt.

Don’t worry ,be happy ……….. is just not practical !!

Do you have ‘Nomophobia’ tendency?

Nomophobia -The term is an abbreviation for “no-mobile-phone phobia“,

Cambridge Dictionary says

Fear or worry at the idea of being without your mobile phone or unable to use it.

Nomophobia

It’s lack of control over the use of a cell phone,a kind of dependence.

It includes

1.frequent checking of the cell phone,

2.Not bothering about-face to face interaction during discussions.

3.Using the cell phone in an inappropriate place.

4.Feeling restless or anxious without cell phone.

5 Avoiding social interactions.

6.Decline in performance.

7.Easily distracted by e mails, notifications etc.

8.Can become restless when

  • Lose the phone
  • Run out of battery
  • Have no network coverage
  • Can result in panic attacks.
  • Depression rarely.

Researches have shown abnormal changes happening in the brain due to both the excessive use of  cell phone and also because of nomophobia.

Is there any solution for nomophobia ?

All the people whomever I came across I put this question and the answer invariably was ,they are not addicted to mobile phone, and at the same breath they tell me that they can’t imagine life without mobile phone even for a single minute.

I am not sure what exactly they are trying to convey.

I guess there is no proper solution.

Solutions available on the internet are of not much help.

Can you suggest some practical remedies ?
