‘Rat Race’ according to Wikipedia

A rat race is an endless, self-defeating, or pointless pursuit. The phrase equates humans to rats attempting to earn a reward such as cheese, to no avail. It may also refer to a competitive struggle to get ahead financially or routinely.

Do I remember,when I joined the rat race ?

I am not sure,but I can recollect 1.My school days. 2.My college days.3 As an employee/consultant & 4. As I am aging.
My school days

school days,rat race,competition

I hate to get up early in the morning, but sadly that is the routine. With Heavy school bag and daily grinding,it used to be a tiresome job.
And remember plenty of examination schedules and so much pressure from parents,to get the first rank ,not in one subject but all the subjects and throughout schooling and the competition among students was heavy,as to who gets the first rank,so that one can be in good books of the teachers, principal etc.
Even in the school sports schedules, there is no let up.One has to get some medal without fail.
So much of rat race in schooling days. Why the rat race in schools ?Any idea ? It’s only for better ranking so that admission to my preferred colleges is easier.
My college days
Those days
Parents wished me to become a doctor since it was a respectable profession in the society and also better financial prospects.
To get an admission into the Medical college is the toughest compared to getting admission into the Engineering course. So To fulfill my parent’s wish I had to be part of the rat race and since I got selected in the Medical profession,I thought I have won the race. But,lo behold, still the process has not ended.
But just MBBS qualification( 5 yrs course) alone is not enough. We have to get admitted to the post graduation courses like MD/MS etc ( 3 yrs course),followed by specialized courses (radiology, neurosurgery etc) of another 3 to 5 yrs.
So the struggle continued.
At last I have got all the qualifications required + License to practice. But as a professional, freshly qualified, how I am going to be a successful practitioner ?Already ,the society is over saturated with Medical Practitioners. How I am ging to compete ? So the rat race saga continues.
As an employee/consultant
It was tough to get a decent job initially.
And to be accepted by the society…takes hell lot of time.
Then there is prestige issue.
Oh ! you are a doctor, how come you don’t have a car? Do you work in any prestigious hospital ? Are you Residing in small flat ? Are you in a rental house? shame on you ! Come on it is below your dignity….
These are the observations and comments from the friends, patients and well wishers.
To achieve some respectability I am supposed to own a bungalow,a car,a driver, and I should have my own hospital….what not ?
Added to this is a new addition to the family with the expenses sky rocketing …
So I have to work hard and harder,do extra duty hours, attend emergency calls,do regular night duties, to earn that little extra so that I can have my dignity and respect in the society.
Is this not all for the false prestige ?? What about family time ? Where is the happiness ?

As I am aging

My liabilities are increasing, due to reasonable or unreasonable demands, with commercial advertisement and new product release, adding to the agony and there is no chance of winning or coming out of rat race. So, more loans, mortgages, more liabilities become part and parcel of LIFE !
In Ilias Tisagklis words

A person entrenched into the “Rat Race” is the “proud” owner of a time consuming job which he desperately needs in order to be able to pay mortgage, rent, bills, credit card debt and all kinds of liabilities”

Eddie Murphy’s quote

Seventy-five years. That’s how much time you get if you’re lucky. Seventy-five years. Seventy-five winters, seventy-five springtimes, seventy-five summers, and seventy-five autumns. When you look at it like that, it’s not a lot of time, is it? Don’t waste them. Get your head out of the rat race and forget about the superficial things that pre-occupy your existence and get back to what’s important now.

Am I stuck in the quick sand ?

Probably one should remember the following quote in the early stages ……

rat race,compitition,struggle,human tendency

Finally

Often, people work long hard hours at jobs they hate, to earn money to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t like. — Nigel Marsh
My sincere thanks for reaching this point.Huh ! I am exhausted in the rat race.Let me have some supplements !

Are you a ‘wanting’ or a ‘giving’ personality?

Not enough,greedy

“Enough of any thing is plenty.but plenty to some people is not enough”Sophie Irene Loeb

First let us talk about ‘Wanting’ personalities-

More money ,more popularity, more pleasure, more likes in social media, more than 1000 friends/follows in social media, more achievements ( though positive ),more power one can go on… and remember, we are never tired of ‘wanting’ more. This has become a human trait.

Why you want more and more …..and even more ?

Probably you fear the ‘uncertain’ future, probably you are ‘greedy’.

These things make you develop desire, lust and finally, frustration if not successful and you may go into a dejection/depression/revengeful mode.

As the ‘ wanting’ personality, you are always obsessed with more and more demands and quick & positive outcome.

You are restless.

Can you survive a good relationship?( Wife, relatives and friends ).

The relationship can go sour since you are not getting what you wanted and when you get,it becomes incomplete since you have newer demands cropping up.

You are unhappy all the time.Neither you make people around you happy.

So you make yours and other’s lives miserable.

The point I am stressing is that you lost your commonsense and fail to know the difference between ‘love’ and ‘desire

“Love lasts a longtime but burning desire lasts two to three weeks” Carla Bruni

At the end who is happy?

Now let us talk of ‘Giving’ personalities…

Let us say, now that you, the ‘giving’ type, and we all know naturally, you are the happiest person on the earth.

But note down.’Giving’ personalities are of different types because their ‘giving’ pattern depends on factors like faith,Fear, self serving and spontaneous

  1. Faith- These people have faith in God, and depending upon their religion philosophy, they donate some percentage of their earnings.and become the givers.
  2. Fear- comes to some, since many bad things happening in their lives, they make commitments to do some charity, hoping to get compensated by the Almighty and may derive some satisfaction.
  3. Self serving- these are greedy people in real sense and they indulge in ‘giving’, since they expect returns. Some say one can continue  one’s sins by religiously donating some percentage of one’s illegal earnings to temples, churches etc.
  4. Spontaneous-These ‘givers’ are emotional type and they don’t hesitate to donate (even if they are poor),whenever they come across emotional incidences, which require monetary help.

If you are a ‘giving’ person, you are said to be guy with a kind heart, you enjoy the ‘feel good’ factor, you have a fulfillment and finally total satisfaction .Wait…….

Are you sure whom to give, when to give and how much to give ?

My feeling is…. the ‘giver’ must be judicious.

1.If you belong to too much ‘giving’ type-people may take advantage and even misuse your kindness.

2. Your continuous ‘giving’ habit can bring down motivation among the ‘takers’ and they may become lazy.

3.If you happen to be ‘giving’ to the ‘wanting’ personalities, then you are doing a great harm to your philosophy.

So there is some ‘ART’ which you have to follow if you belong to ‘giving’ trait.

Thank you so much for taking your time to reach this point.

Do you agree that  most of us belong  to both categories with variation in intensity?
