The Japanese dish Tempura is made up of deep-fried fish or vegetables that have been coated in a thin, crunchy batter.
Portuguese missionaries brought this cooking method to Japan in the 16th century, and it has since become a mainstay of Japanese cuisine.
It’s one of the most popular Japanese dishes, so you don’t miss ordering when you are in a Japanese restaurant.
What ingredients make up the batter?
The batter used in tempura is typically made from a mixture of flour, cornstarch, baking powder, and ice-cold water.
Normal tempura batter ingredients include flour, cornflour, baking powder and ice-cold water. The batter is then gently churned to generate a lumpy texture that contributes to the finished dish’s light and crispy texture.
Tempura fried- Many times you may come across this display on the menu. It simply refers to the food that was dipped in this batter and fried.

How tempuras are made?
To facilitate speedy and consistent cooking, the components are frequently chopped into tiny pieces or thin slices.
To prepare tempura, the ingredients are first dipped in the batter and then quickly deep-fried in hot oil until they are golden brown and crispy.
The finished dish is typically served with a dipping sauce made from soy sauce, mirin, and dashi, and is often garnished with grated daikon radish or grated ginger.

Tempura is one of my favorites. I always thought of it as thoroughly Japanese. Now you tell me that it came from Portugal centuries ago. So there must be another “branch” of this dish. Sadly, I know of no Portuguese restaurants near me.

Though it’s popularised by Japanese, it is said it was started by Portugese sailors when they landed in Japan.
The funny part is that nobody talks of Tempura as A Portugese origin.
