SPINES
In the above photo, you can see the leaves having thorns.
They appear sharp.
I don’t know what this tree is and the first time I have come across leaves with projecting spikes.
Later I realized that they are not thorns. They are spines. Botanical Jargon!
What are thorns, spines, and Prickles?
Botanically,
- Thorns are derived from shoots
- Spines are derived from leaves
- Prickles are derived from the epidermal tissue of the plant
The spines reduce the loss of water by transpiration
The spines of the leaf also discourage the animals from eating.
They are intimidating for those coming closer.
“If my strength intimidates you, I hope you realize that’s a weakness of yours.” Unknown
THORN
Thorns remind me of the famous idiom ‘Thorn in the Flesh’
“Thorn in the flesh is nothing compared to a thorn in the conscience” Adrian Rogers
Thank you for your visit.
Take care, my friend.

Thanks for your contribution Philo, and also for the education: great to know the difference, I wasn’t aware of this.
