Let us shellabrate!

Seashell

Ever wondered about Seashells?

These were full of life once.

While collecting these seashells it never strikes us that these shells were once home to living creatures.

These creatures are molluscs, which build these shells.

They are beautiful with their intricate architecture, design and alignment of the lines.

They are mother nature’s wonder.

They are not just a source of food, they have been a source of textiles (sea silk), fertiliser (ammonite) and drugs.

What happens once these creatures die?

They leave their shell behind once they die. And these shells eventually wash upon the beach.

What is the role of these shells in the ecosystem, apart from usage by humans?

  • They are used by crabs
  • They act as a shelter for young fish
  • Birds use these shells to build nests
  • Shells on the shore stabilise the sand
  • Shells provide nutrients to sand-dwelling organisms
