Let us shellabrate!

Ever wondered about Seashells?

These were full of life once.

While collecting these seashells it never strikes us that these shells were once home to living creatures.

These creatures are molluscs, which build these shells.

They are beautiful with their intricate architecture, design and alignment of the lines.

They are mother nature’s wonder.

They are not just a source of food, they have been a source of textiles (sea silk), fertiliser (ammonite) and drugs.

What happens once these creatures die?

They leave their shell behind once they die. And these shells eventually wash upon the beach.

What is the role of these shells in the ecosystem, apart from usage by humans?

  • They are used by crabs
  • They act as a shelter for young fish
  • Birds use these shells to build nests
  • Shells on the shore stabilise the sand
  • Shells provide nutrients to sand-dwelling organisms

You are missing something if you have no beach to walk

  • People, especially kids love to collect them when they stroll on the beach
  • Searching for seashells and walking on the beach go hand in hand
  • Ever put a seashell up to your ear? The echoes you hear, sound like ocean waves
  • The seashells are so popular that every beach has a store selling seashells
  • The Seashell collection is a hobby
  • And display of the seashell collection is an art
  • Seashells make a great souvenir
  • Seashell necklace is popular in 5-star hotels, where the guests are welcomed by putting the seashell necklace around their necks when they arrive

Seashell symbolism

  • A seashell is a great reminder of the lovely journey one undertakes throughout one’s life
  • There is life even after death
  • Seashell represents strength by protecting the creature on its life’s journey.
  • I understand that a seashell is the symbol of baptism in Christianity

“Like seashells, we are beautiful and unique, each with a story to tell” Soma
