Rain or shine it’s time to dine
North Indian Vegetarian Thali in my part of South India, is a simple combination of a variety of food items.
Before that, you should know about the word THALI.
What is thali?
Thali is a Hindi word meaning a metal plate.
Concerning food, thali means a plate or tray on which a meal is served.
Thali meals are an integral part of Cuisine in India.
The dishes vary from region to region and can be vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
The purpose of thali is to provide a balanced diet in the form of 6 flavours salt, sweet, bitter, astringent, sour and spicy.
Indian Thali
A typical dish of a North Indian thali includes rice, dhal, vegetables, roti, pappad, dhahi, some pickles and sweets.
South Indian thali serves rice, sambar, rasam, fried pappad, curd, pickle and sweets.
Both vegetarian and meat-based thalis can be served. Exclusive vegetarian restaurants are popular in many places
Indians are known for having elaborate meals.
The various names I have mentioned are just basics.
Starters alone can be more than a dozen, apart from the main course.

This is what many restaurants here in the states might call a combo plate, a collection of tastes more complicated than a main dish and a side or two.

Thank you, John.
You are right.
It’s indeed a combo plate.
Haha…”A collection of tastes more complicated that the main dish”
You brought smiles and your statement is true.
