Grab life by the beans!

If you are looking to include proteins in vegetarian meals, go with beans.

National bean day is celebrated on 6th January annually.

Beans are a rich source of protein and come in different shapes, colour and under different names.

Indian beans (Lablab beans) are long, curved and flat-shaped beans.

Inside the pod, it contains 3 to 6 oval-shaped seeds colour ranging from white to light brown to green.

It’s available throughout the year.

It has got many names including Sem kiphalli, Avarai, avarakkai, sem, Sheem, Val Papdi, Chikkudukaya and Hurulikai.

English names include flat beans and field beans.

I am not sure whether it’s popular in your country.

Nutritional value

They are rich in proteins, calcium, iron, zinc, phosphorous, fiber and vitamin C.

Applications

Being a legume, it’s commonly used in curries and stir-fries.

They are incorporated into soups, salads, deserts even main courses that contain rice and vegetables.

They pair well with onions and garlic.
