Is it Autumn or Fall?
Do both convey the same meaning?
I am not sure.
My understanding is that autumn refers to the third season of the year and Fall refers to slip/drop from a height, indicating falling of the leaves from the trees.
British readers may raise an eyebrow if you use ‘fall’.
For people like me, it makes no difference.
What is the autumnal equinox?
This happens around September 22 every year and the day has equal amounts of daylight and darkness after which the days get shorter until the winter solstice. (beginning of winter)
How are things in my part of the world?
In Autumn, we are aware that leaves fall from the trees and trees start bursting into a riot of colours.
In my part of the country not much happens.
That’s OK. What else we can do?
But I do come across very few trees that follow the typical autumn but not necessarily full-blown colours.
Leaves of certain trees or plants show nature’s beauty in our place, though rare to witness such a change.
In our country (India) we just have four seasons.
- Winter (December to April)
- Summer (April to July)
- The rainy season ( June to September)
- Post-monsoon (October to December)
Slight overlapping can happen depending upon the location, whether you are in northern India or southern India.
Autumn is supposed to be between September and October.
Message
“A moral character is attached to autumnal scenes;
The leaves falling like our years, the flowers fading like our hours, the clouds fleeting like our illusions, the light diminishing like our intelligence, the sun growing colder like our affections, the rivers becoming frozen like our lives–
All bear secret relations to our destinies.”
Francois Rene de Chateaubriand

I think you’re right … how we experience seasons varies depending on where you are in the world. I just think of Autumn as the transition between Summer and Winter. I say Autumn, but I always just thought of Fall is a different word for the same thing.

Thank you Brenda.
Usage of both words ok as long as there is no confusion.
Sadly we don’t see much change in colour of leaves here.

I believe you got all four colors on that leaf. Brilliant and extra credit points 😀

It was interesting to discuss autumn/fall with my grandchildren. For them, fall describes autumn.
I loved the quote, and yet autumn is also a promise of quiet winters, and waking springs.

Glad that the post created some curiosity and you discussed with your lovely grand children about fall/Autumn.
Food for thought.
