The topic ‘Column’ brought some confusion with another term ‘Pillar’, especially for fellows like me whose
mother tongue is not English.
Are column and pillar same or different?
I am aware of the newspaper column.
I am also aware of the column on a computer spreadsheet.
But structure-wise?
I am not sure.
Readers may help me.
The above image is Giant’s Causeway, a world heritage site located in Northern Ireland.
Notice the interlocking basalt columns.
Thank you for your visit.
Take care, my friend.
Namaste 🙏🙏🙏

Your fantastic photo answers your question, dear Philo. Even though column and pillar are synonymous, in architecture, pillars are used to support something, while columns could be either supporting or free-standing.

I am so fortunate to be interacting with a great encyclopedia.
Your clarification cleared my doubt once for all.
I have images of both columns and pillars.
I was not sure which to select for the theme.
Luckily I selected the correct one.
Thank you Dolly.

I am blushing all over the internet! I am not an encyclopedist by far, but my undergraduate degree was in music and arts. I just happen to remember those things from college.
