Merriam Webster Dictionary defines pack rat as
- A bushy-tailed rodent or
- A person who collects or hoards especially unneeded items.
Since I don’t have images of this rodent, let me talk about human pack rats.
The funny (rather sad) part is certain people collect the things that are of no use to them, yet hesitate to donate, thinking that they may use them in the future.
Simply, the idea is to ‘save the items for a rainy day’
It may also be a reason that you are very much attached to the item though it’s useless to you.
Maybe every human is a Pack Rat unknowingly?
“Everyone has pack rat hidden inside them; it only comes out at the right time” Unknown
Someone intelligently said that he is not a packrat but a ‘collector’!
My friend, it is a weird habit and you may reach a situation wherein you may not find space in your home for those items which you need!
Pack Rat day
Are you aware that Pack Rat day is celebrated every year on May 17th?
The idea is to bring awareness regarding the habit, encouraging people in removing the clutter thus making more space available and cleanliness maintained.
An introspection indeed!
And do you have habit of decluttering your closet regularly?
Pack Rat vs Hoarder
A packrat will clutter up the home saying that the items may be required in the future while a hoarder accumulates the items fearing that the item may not be available in the future or the items can be sold at a higher price when there is a shortage.
Hoarding is said to be a mental disorder.
Some say being a packrat may be a sign of hoarding!
Note to self
Less stuff really means
- Less to organise
- Less to clean
- Less mess
- Less to store
- More room to breath
- Less stress
- Less is more
