Nothing can bring you peace but yourself-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Searching-for-serenity
“There is a contradiction in wanting to be perfectly secure in a universe whose very nature is momentariness and fluidity“ Alan Watts

I wish to discuss the topic of ‘Searching for Serenity’ in a different way.

The point I wish to stress is that ‘The Serenity’ we all talk, about is nothing but temporary relief.

How true Alan Watts quote!!

What is serenity?

It’s the state of being calm, peaceful and untroubled.

Why should you search for serenity?

My friend, it should be part of your routine.

Yes. It’s possible to be calm in all those stressful times.

It guides you on how to be calm in the presence of troubling situations.

Both your physical and mental well being is taken care of.

These things are possible because you are in charge of your life.

Most importantly you can control your reactions to the impact of your emotional status.

How does one achieve serenity?

Is it possible to find serenity in this chaotic post-Corona World?

With COVID reborn as OMICRON, and multiple variants fast-spreading, and the disease showing its fangs and economic activity at its lowest, so many loss of jobs, people struggling to survive, more restrictions, now truckers strike spreading everywhere, and many busy knocking the Heaven doors, how can you expect Serenity?

My friend, I understand your concern.

Everybody including you and me suffering a lot.

Yet it is possible to achieve serenity.

Luckily there is no set of rules.

Each one of us is different and each one of us tries to find serenity by some means that can differ from person to person.

“The poor long for riches, the rich long for heaven, but the wise long for a state of tranquillity”  Swami Rama

Any suggestions?

You have full freedom to laugh at my suggestion. It is fine with me. As I told you above, each one of us is different and can have different approaches to attain serenity.

Some seek serenity in the external world and many try to find peace by spending time with Mother Nature or with pets or may find solace in drugs. Some may plan travel. Some try music. Some others may find peace in art. There are so many avenues you can search and try.

Here you are trying to achieve ‘serenity’ by external means.

Afterwards?

You are dejected because your serenity is elusive.

You are back to square one. Is it not so?

My friend, mark my words. Serenity does not come from your ‘external state’

It comes from your ‘with in’ my friend.

“Grant me the serenity,

To accept the things I can’t change;

Courage to change the things I can;

And wisdom to know the difference” Unknown

My thoughts

  • Life is not just about your family problems or imbalance of your work-family commitments. It’s much more than this. You do things that make you smile.
  • Be thankful for what you already have and many are denied even the minimum luxury you have at present.
  • Remember you have to win the battle in the mind.

  1. What wonderful words, Philo. I particularly liked: “Be thankful for what you already have and many are denied even the minimum luxury you have at present.
Remember you have to win the battle in the mind.”
It is very true that it is in the mind the need exists for happiness and the secret to finding contentment.
Changing attitudes and thinking/reactions can change your life. There is much to be thankful for in the external world and it is only our internal perception of that which can lead to the illusive feelings of happiness and contentment we all seek.
    Lovely post!

    1. Thank you Amanda for your kind and encouraging words.

As I said I was trying to understand the very purpose of serenity and how well the humans can achieve serenity throughout the duration of their existence on Earth.

I was just trying to figure it out whether one can seek serenity on a permanent basis or it’s based on individual perception of what serenity constitutes for the time being.

I was also wondering whether the meaning ‘serenity’ can change from time to time for the same person.

      Apologies for the rant.

Your theme made me to think the inevitability that the ‘serenity’ what wee all seek is a temporary one. And that is the way of life and we can never tame our monkey mind which is never tired of disturbing our peace of mind at the cost of our health.

Earlier we recognise this, one can attain tranquility in sense that tranquility/serenity is an illusion and no need to chase!

      1. The chasing of it is a waste of time and detracts from enjoying those special moments and the flood of serotonin they induce. It is a human failing to continually chase this concept as a permanent part of life. Without some challenges, I assume boredom would creep in?

        1. Thanks again.

          You are right.

One must fully enjoy those moments of serenity one is able to achieve, instead of wasting time on those impeding problems.

I know it’s a tough job in balancing both.

Agree. Life is boring if we have no problems to face and that is the exact reason…serenity is relevant.
