Thursday Thoughts

Can we change others?

I just can’t understand why you wish to change others in the first place?

You may ask, what do I mean by changing others?

My point is- should we advise people such that they understand our point of view that can be beneficial to all the concerned and chances are that they change in their thinking.

Here you are thinking that your advice is helpful(I’m sure your intentions are good) for the other person to change, may be you are trying to impose?

My friend, everybody is unique and that’s it.

By trying to change others you may be helping them or hurting them

You may be gaining friends or enemies.

Why don’t you just shut up and mind your business?

Some say we should change people and help society but many say society is unique in its way and people have to fall in line.

Some feel- it’s not our job to change others.

Added to this there is a saying that ‘you can’t change the people’ yet many try to influence and change the others.

How easily you can change others?

I don’t know.

But the following quote may be of some help.

“Consider how hard it is to change yourself

And you will understand what little chance you have in trying to change others” Unknown

Any message?

You can’t change people. You can change your expectations. You can set boundaries and make decisions about how much time and effort you give. You can refocus your attention. You can practice acceptance and letting go.

But you can’t mould someone into who you want or need them to be. You can’t force them to make a shift before they’re ready. You can’t ask them to become someone different than who they authentically are. You shouldn’t have to. And that can be a painful truth to sit with. That no matter how much you beg and explain things. No matter how many times you say what you need and communicate what hurts, that a person you care about can’t show up for you in the way you need. That sometimes, there’s no one to blame and nothing to fix.”
