The scene reminds me of a school in China. Something about the white tiles and the utilitarian seating.

I agree.
Thank you so much for the inspiration.

This photo has me so curious – on one hand it feels upscale, on another hand it feels under construction or for an institution?

Actually it’s seating arrangement for breakfast or lunch in a religious place.
It’s meant for those pilgrims who can’t squat on the floor (Due to backache etc), so that they can sit comfortably on these seats.
In Hindu religious places, people squat on the ground while eating.
Thank you my friend.

Hi – thanks for that
And a while ago I started hearing about how awesome squatting is!
Well
If your body can handle it – but a few health coaches i know include it in thir tips for health because it is often better than standing or sitting – they don’t always suggest it for eating but suggest folks squat in the back of a room at a conference rather than sit for hours and hours

My apologies.
I forgot to mention about ‘Sukhasana’, this is the position while eating. Here the legs are crossed while sitting.
This position is different from just plain squatting.
Advantages of crossed leg sitting…while eating- you can check this link

Those seats do look really hard for the bottom, lol

Exactly! Bottom must be strong😂😂
It’s for the people suffering from back ache and who can’t squat on the floor while performing religious duties.
