Just one person around the world

This post is part of Cady’s –Just one person around the world  Photo Challenge.

She wants us to take the time to focus on one person a week to bring us together, to celebrate ordinary folks…

She hopes this will bring us all together and reveal how connected we are…………even though we are each in our own little world!

In the above photograph what you think the person is doing?

It was a hot day with temperature going beyond 36° c (96.8° F), and on the busy road…I noticed this Gentleman….suddenly bending his body and removing the face mask, changing the angle of his face.
Also, I observed that he kept his left hand on his forehead and went on adjusting his hairstyle. This amused me.
If you look closely he is also having a comb in his right hand.

Now you have guessed correctly.

Yes, he is busy combing his hair and adjusting the style pattern….. mind you… on this hot day.

Now I know your next question

Where is the mirror?
If you are visiting India, surely you will come across our Auto rickshaws. You know that Auto Rickshaws are motorised versions of a pulled rickshaw or cycled rickshaw (3 wheels), the commonest mode of public transport. They Are also popularly known as tuk-tuk or tukxi in other parts of the world.
Yes my friend you can notice the mirror in the photograph below. It’s nothing but a sunscreen sheet fixed to the rear portion of the vehicle. And in the daylight, it acts as a mirror.

And this Sunscreen sheet is helping the person in the form of a mirror and  he is busy grooming!

I was under the impression that after the invention of the front camera in mobile phones and selfie became extremely popular, there was no need for any mirror and I was proved wrong. Indian Market is huge and everybody irrespective of financial background possesses a mobile.

So just a selfie is not going to satisfy the person. People love to groom themselves whenever they come across mirrors or shining mirror-like surfaces.

Why this obsession?

Now I realised that it’s instant human behaviour to admire once face, whenever one comes across a mirror or any surface which acts as a mirror.

I noticed people enjoying their beauty in the lifts, malls, or any glass doors which can act as temporary mirrors.

I remember in my childhood days, a person who used to adjust his hair style by watching his face shadow from the sunlight. Must be an extremely intelligent guy!

Now the silly question I am going to ask is…

Everybody is beautiful. Is it not so?

Where is the need for a mirror?

  • Why people are addicted to seeing their faces so many times a day in the mirror?
  • Is it not a fact that one’s face changes not in a day but over the years?
  • What is that thrill one gets in admiring one’s face as many times as possible in a single day?
  • Any limits?
  • Is this abnormal behaviour or normal behaviour?
  • What is this psychology or philosophy?
  • Any supporting evidence?

I am curious. Is this a laughing matter ? or this is accepted social norm?

“Man shouldn’t be able to see his own face – there’s nothing more sinister. Nature gave him the gift of not being able to see it, and of not being able to stare into his own eyes.

Only in the water of rivers and ponds could he look at his face. And the very posture he had to assume was symbolic. He had to bend over, stoop down, to commit the ignominy of beholding himself.

The inventor of the mirror poisoned the human heart.”   Fernando Pessoa

  1. This post reminds me of a friend of mine who teaches philosophy. For every explanation he gave, it led to a question. We always anticipate the next question 😀 But I enjoyed reading it. Good one.

  2. Philo, I love this photo! It is so telling of human nature isn’t it? I think we want to put our best face forward!!!! As for me, I would be checking to see if I had something spilled down the front of my blouse! Cady
