Rangoli is a colourful art.
The purpose of Rangoli is to feel the strength, generosity and said to bring good luck and it is drawn early in the morning at the entrance point of the house.
It’s auspicious to draw Rangoli in Hindu Dharma during festivals and religious ceremonies.
Art is created on the floor or ground by using materials such as coloured rice, coloured sand, quartz powder and flower petals.
Rangoli is said to have 5000 years of history.

Philo I asked another blogger about these patterns when I saw them in her photos…..Are they mainly drawn for festivals or can they be drawn anytime? Are there women, who specialize in this or is a family member given the task?

I am glad you asked these questions.
1. Colourful Rangolis are drawn during major Hindu festival occasions like,Diwali, Sankranti, Pongal and Onam.
2. Routine Rangolis ( Simple form ) are drawn daily, early in the morning, in front of the house.
Why is is drawn only during morning hours?
After day’s wind, rain or pedestal foot steps wears away the design drawn on the previous day, new design created on the following day. Old design is thoroughly wiped out and new one drawn, just to remind one that life is nothing but a constant change.
As I said in my post, doing so brings good luck to the family and is a welcome sign to those visiting the house.
And it is said to have positive vibrations from Cosmic forces.

3. Usually the senior ladies ( mother,aunts,cousin sisters ) in the house teach the art to the younger generation, mostly girls.
Anybody in the family can draw and mostly women do this job.
To be precise it’s part of parenting.
