Why you want to hold on to something?

“No matter how much you try to hold on to something, it will all be gone.”   Taoist proverb

Humans are peculiar

You are unique.

No surprise, Emotions are part of your life and you have feelings towards certain things and chances are that you hesitate to be separated from your belongings.

You may argue that they have sentimental values.

The things you hold on can be from teddy bears, souvenirs, old clothes, kitchen items, plastic silverware, old and damaged photos, old radios, gramophones, office stuff, the clutter in your backyard, basement and things in your closet ( Clothes from the sales, newspapers, expired goods, furniture, toys, old cell phones etc….the list is too long).

Even with the computer, you are not willing to delete things which you no longer need.

Photographers hesitate to delete the photos though they red mark it for deletion.

Oh….the thought of clutter made me dive into this a topic a bit deeper.

At one stage we hold on to things we no longer need.

By holding on to these things are we becoming hoarders?

Do you remember ‘Toilet paper saga’ during early Covid days? Everybody was hoarding and adding to the clutter.

As time passes your clutter can become your junk.

Are clutter & Junk the same?

No, my friend.

Clutter is a disordered jumble of things. There is no discipline here.

Junk is a discarded or waste material. Also known by the terms rubbish and trash.

To be frank with you, I think your clutter is preventing you from leading a good life.

The longer you keep your stuff, the more attached you become.

What best you can do to declutter?

First, you prevent the accumulation of clutter from being built up.

Label the items as toss, give or donate.

  • In tossing, you can simply throw the items in the dust bin.
  • In giving- Here the items you don’t use any more can be given to those who love to use it.
  • Donate the items that are still good and you don’t need them anymore…

So far I have been talking about ‘clutter’ in terms of physical form

What about our own clutter?

“Clutter is not just physical stuff. It’s old ideas, toxic relationships and bad habits. Clutter is anything that does not support your better self”  Eleanor Brown

Take home message

“What I know for sure is that when you declutter, whether it’s on your home, your head or your heart-it’s astounding what will flow into that space that will enrich you, your life and your family”  Peter Walsh

  1. I live pretty minimalist except for my computer. I tried to declutter that once and it wasn’t a week later that one of the old things was needed again. two more things were wanted after that. Now I’m afraid to delete anything Silly? Yes but it’s my silly
