Lens-Artists Photo Challange 114: Negative Space

Negative space in Photography

It’s the space around the object itself that helps define the positive space or the main focus.

In other words it creates the right relationship between the area of interest and the background.

“You come to the photograph as an aesthetic object with no context… Then you step in and read the text and then out again to revisit the image in a completely different way. I’m interested in that space between text and image. The piece becomes the negative space between the two”. Taryn Simón

Negative space photography

“Contour, negative space, and measurements. You just learned the three important lessons in drawing and saved yourself four years of art school”. Danny Gregory

Thank you.

A lovely example – the texture of the tree adds some nice texture to the image.

Lovely contrast. I agree with Tina. The texture of the tree creates a wonderful negative space background.
