What is senior moment ?
According to Merriam Webster
“an instance of momentary forgetfulness or confusion that is attributed to the aging process”.
Are you getting scared that you and your life partner have reached or soon going to reach senior moments ?
Don’t worry.It is just one of the myths of ‘Old Age’.
Old age is said to be the most unexpected of all things that can happen to a person.It catches you with amazing speed !
People forget two things anyhow.( peoples memory is short always ! )
1.That old age is another stage in one’s life cycle.
2.It is question of time everybody going to reach this stage of life cycle.
Ageism has become another bias for false assumptions !

1.Myth- You lose memory as you are aging
It is perfectly normal to forget things from time to time at any given time of the age.
Example,you may forget the name of the person just you met or you may struggle to recollect certain things of the immediate past or you might have forgotten an appointment.
It is also normal if you forget things based on your life style like habitual drinking or when you go into depression,or stress or lack of sleep.
Truth– Majority of the humans don’t lose memory.Remember just less than 10% suffer from memory loss that too because of diseases like Alzhei mer.
Your physician can easily tell the type of your memory loss if at all you think you have one.

2.Myth- You have less interest in sex
People always think that sex belongs to the young and it is undignified if an older person talks of sex.
Truth-People are living longer these days and remain healthy and are sexually active and attractive and it’s o.k and natural, if they express sexual urge.
If required tablets and lubricants are utilized under medical supervision.
Sex does not mean straight intercourse.
Kissing,touching,comfort hugging can bring back the energy. Couples emotion intimacy is multiplied.Also since children are settled,couples can be more playful.
3.Myth-You are less productive,a burden,incompetent and less adaptable for the society
It is said old people burn out easily compared to the younger ones,in offices and factories.
Truth-But for health conditions,majority of the old people are active and helping their grand children,many are busy working as volunteers.
To be precise,older people are loyal,reliable and are more productive.Replacing older workers is more expensive.
These days,older people are quickly adapting to the modern technology.
4.Myth-Being old is being sick
Earlier days,this used to be the situation.People used to die of sickness as medical field was not that much advanced.
Truth-Due to advances in the medical field,environmental awareness,improvement in the quality of life,newer concept of ‘positive thinking’…….all have resulted in longevity and old people are taking greater responsibility to be healthy and active.
5.Myth-You tend to be rigid
Most of you suffer from outdated views and rigid thinking ,because you are brought up in that environment.You tend to be strict and not flexible.
Truth-Things have changed drastically and old people are catching fast with modern technology to the surprise of younger generation.
Old people love to listen to the saner voices and are willing to mould themselves.
6.Myth-you are obsessed with death and keep fearing all the time
It’s False.It is the younger people that are more worried about death since they have so many commitments to be fulfilled and love to postpone death.
Truth-Older people are more concerned dying in dignity.
7.Myth-You are stingy
Older people hesitate to spare their money.
Truth-Older people tend to spend their money meaningfully for the simple fact that they don’t wish to depend on others financially.
Also remember,it is the other way,the property and money of older people automatically goes to their heirs.
8.Myth-You are depressed
Depression is a possibility if you have lost the other half and you are alone,since children too left you due to their commitments. But you know all is not lost and you know you can recoup.
Truth-It is possible to take control of yourself.Become active by joining volunteer groups.keep in touch with your friends and relatives.
9.You are never tired of boring younger generation with your nonstop advices and comparisons of things in your time to present time
Younger people run away from you,Sick of your advices,make fun of you saying your thoughts are outdated ( generation gap )
Truth– Believe me,their advices are near to truth,given from years of experience and wisdom,better than counselors.
Aging well- Is this a possible ?
Yes. It is possible.
NHS advices that one can control fast ageing by adopting
- A healthy diet,
- Sufficient exercise,
- Positive attitude,
- Learning to adapt to changes,
- Continuing to engage actively in life through productivity and strong relationships.
