Why do we Judge others ? Do we have the right ?

“Judge not, that ye be not judged”  Matthew 7:1

It’s 2.5 minute read,GO ahead if you have time & inclination.Thank you.

I am not talking about friends & relatives judging us or vice versa.

I am talking about people we come across in our day-to-day life, whom we know nothing about ( unknown to us ).

It is but natural for all of us to judge the other person with an electrifying speed !

How do we judge a person ?

By appearance= Facial-ugly or beautiful ..Body build -fat or thin ?

Body Language ?

By color ? Whether smiled or not ? By hairstyle ?

By Behavior ?   By  person’s dress ? By seeing the tattoos and piercings ?

Is it true that ‘ First impression is the best impression’ ?

And  later on many times we felt sorry that our first impression went horribly wrong!

Then why we jump to judge people ? Do we have any right ?

Probable reasons for rushing to Judgment …..

Is it because of fear of the unknown?

Is it because…I can never go wrong, (mind-set)

Is it because we think we are superior and at the top of pyramid and rest are lesser mortals ?

Is it because ,we are insecure about ourselves?

Are we not lying to ourselves by judging others ?  The answer is ……

“Judge me if you want, but at the end of my life, I choose to have memories not regrets.”  Steve Maraboli

Read this story

A 24-year-old boy seeing out from the train window, shouted…

“Dad look the trees are going behind!”,dad smiled and a young couple sitting nearby, looked at the 24 year old’s childish behavior with pity, suddenly he again exclaimed…”dad,look..the clouds are running with us!”

The couple couldn’t resist and said to the old man…”why don’t you take your son to a good doctor ?”.The old man smiled and said….I did and we are just coming from the hospital,my son was blind from the birth,he just got his eyes today…”

Every single person on the planet has a story.

Don’t judge people before you truly know them. The truth might surprise you.

“Judge tenderly, if you must. There is usually a side you have not heard, a story you know nothing about, and a battle waged that you are not having to fight.” Traci Lea LaRussa11

Judging the other in a flash of second…….I call it blind Judgement.

“Judging others make us blind.where as love is illuminating.By judging others we blind ourselves to our own ( short comings ) and to the grace which others are just as entitled to as we are.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Any thoughts you have ? Would you like to share ?

Thank you.

  1. Nobody is Superior,
    Nobody is inferior,
    But nobody is equal either.
    People are simply unique, incomparable,
    You are you,
    I am I….
    (Buddha’s teaching)
So where does the question of judging each other comes ….?
And one more reference which speak against judging others in Bible

    Luke 6:37-42
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned. “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure–pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
So beware every time our tongue rises in judgment against others.
Indeed a very thought provoking post Sri. ..

    • Thank you Ana, Both the quotes are perfect eye opener and one has to follow sincerely, but then we are human beings with our superiority complex mentalities of different grades…who cares ? Who is willing to listen.? Many say life is impossible without being judgmental ! Appreciate your insight.

      • Uhmmm ….truly said…We are after all humans.
Prbly another quote can solve this problem…..
        “To err is human…
It is divine to forgive… ”
Hope this takes care of the situation just in case we in our human state we judge others.
        Good Morning Sri….

  2. Technically, if you look at the original verses, it’s “Judge not unrighteous judgments, lest ye be judged”.

People make common sense judgments of strangers all the time, and I think it’s important to apply that same common sense to the discussion here. Judging a person as bad or a threat because of their race; wrong. Judging a person as a threat because they’re snarling, using threatening body language, wearing baggy gang style clothes that could be hiding weapons regardless of their race; VERY fair. Would you really start to cross a street without judging if it the person driving that car was going to slow or stop?

There are plenty of times judging is wrong. There’s also times when it makes perfect sense.

To be honest, there are even times when I think society is a little too easy on the angry aggressive person, etc… We’re supposed to excuse their behavior while holding ourselves to a high standard. Society is going to hell in a hand basket because so many people think they’re entitled to act up in all manner of ways. It used to be accepted that there were socially acceptable ways to handle your problems.
